So, Philip Ardagh must be a pretty interesting guy. On the one hand you have his Eddie Dickens Trilogy, (The Eddie Dickens Trilogy), which has been described as Dickens meets Monty Python, by way of Roald Dahl. On the other hand you have his Henry's House series, which takes Henry and his dog Mothball through such topics as dinosaurs, Egyptians, knights and castles, creepy-crawlies, and bodies.

In this volume Henry and Mothball learn about space. The level seems to be at about first or second grade. The goal seems to be to give the read some familiarity with basic topics, concepts, and key words and ideas. This really could be called something like "My First Space Book". And that's O.K., because the book strikes me as very successful given what it aims to do.

Henry is not developed as a character. He's the kid who wanders through the lab asking questions that start with "Gee, Mr. Wizard, what about ...?". And, there are all kinds of people in the book providing answers - an astronaut, an astronomer, a few professors, an alien or two, and so on. Each exchange is brief and each provides a couple of tidbits of info or an explanation of a phenomenon. (There are occasional humorous asides involving Mothball, who is more interested in what there is to eat.)

Don't dismiss that approach. The book describes the solar system and each planet. It explains the duration of a day and of a year, and does as good a job as possible, in two dimensions, to explain eclipses. It covers asteroids and comets and meteors. It sets out a basic description of earth and its atmosphere. It covers the space race and extra-planetary exploration. A nice touch is the inclusion of Hubble, the International Space Station, and the like. It even tosses in black holes, but at that point it's more to just get that term in the reader's head than to explain anything.

In a way the book is a well organized and engaging "taster", intended to get a young reader familiar with some words and concepts and places and things, and maybe pique his or her curiosity. It is a science book, in the sense that there is no fictional story or plot or adventure. But, as an introductory science book it really does do a nice job of whetting the appetite. That sounds pretty good to me.
